OBD vs OVI for Fleets: Which Clean Truck Check Test Do Your Trucks Need?
Published August 7, 2026 · NorCal CARB Mobile
Mid-year Clean Truck Check windows still catch fleets flat-footed. Two different tests get mixed up at the gate: the OBD scan and the OVI (opacity / visual) smoke test. Wrong assumption means a wasted slot, a failed path into CTC-VIS, or trucks sitting while you sort equipment.
We come to the yard. Here is the plain rule of thumb, our mobile pricing, and how to book in one call: 916-890-4427.
What Clean Truck Check is testing for
CARB Clean Truck Check is periodic heavy-duty emissions compliance for diesel vehicles in the program — not light-duty Smog Check. In 2026, most non-exempt vehicles still run on a semi-annual testing cadence (twice a year). You can often test up to about 90 days before a compliance deadline, but the source of truth for each VIN is the fleet’s CTC-VIS account, not a blog table.
Looking ahead, OBD-equipped vehicles are expected to move toward more frequent testing in later years. Treat that as “coming,” not the only story for today’s booking.
If you are due in this summer window, call 916-890-4427 and we will confirm test type before we roll. See also services.
OBD vs OVI — fleet cheat sheet
| OBD | OVI (opacity) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Electronic scan of the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics | J1667 smoke opacity / visual path for units that need it |
| Typical engines | Newer OBD-equipped HD diesels in the CTC program | Older / opacity-path diesels (incl. many pre-OBD and specific cases) |
| Mobile price (yard) | $75 / truck | $199 / truck |
| Motorhome | OBD $99 | OVI $229 |
| Fleet tip | Batch multiple trucks same visit — ask for multi-truck rate (5+ often better) | |
Do not invent engine year cutoffs from memory. When you book, tell us model year and engine family if you have them. We bring the right kit. Official program details always live with CARB / CTC-VIS.
Why fleets mix them up
- Both show up under “Clean Truck Check” language on the same account
- A mixed fleet can need both tests on the same day
- Shop quotes often lump “emissions” without saying OBD vs opacity equipment
- Deadline math uses VIN + account status — not a single calendar for every truck
Mobile at your yard vs shop downtime
Driving every unit to a shop stacks diesel, driver time, and queue risk. We set up at your yard — Sacramento, Stockton, Bay Area corridors, Central Valley, and surrounding NorCal. Most multi-truck stops finish while the fleet keeps working around the bay.

FAQ
Can you tell me over the phone if I need OBD or OVI?
Usually yes if you know model year and whether the unit is already flagged for opacity path. When unsure, we confirm on site and only charge the test performed.
Is deadline always the same month every year?
No. Confirm each VIN in CTC-VIS. Public “due by registration month” guides are helpers only.
Do you upload / handle paperwork?
Yes — that is part of the mobile job. You keep compliance proof; we do not invent results.
Where do you go?
Northern California yards — Sacramento region, Stockton / San Joaquin, East Bay and South Bay corridors, Napa/Sonoma, Central Valley, and more. See areas.
